Food Allergies

My husband called me with a news story out of a public school in Florida. Turns out there's one student who is highly allergic to peanuts, and if someone so much as comes in after eating the gosh darned things...Lord knows I love 'em...they have to wash their mouths out for 20 minutes. No one can bring peanuts for their own snacks or in their own lunch, nor can they be served in the school cafeteria because of one student in the whole school.

This seems a bit extreme. I get allergy shots. Aren't their shots to desensitize to food allergies too? A friend of mine is also cat allergic, and went thru the same shots I did, and it doesn't bother him to be around cats. I went to a private school in Phoenix that didn't have a license to serve food, so kids had to bring their own. There was no restriction on what you could or could not bring.

Now the preschool where I send my daughter forbids peanuts, and an airline flight I took once couldn't serve 'em for the same reason. Is their an increase in food allergic kids in this generation? I grew up in the '70's, BTW. If so, what is the reason?

it seems peanuts are a common allergy, and it is very serious. it can even cause death if the person isn't prepared. trust me, I have a food allergy, and I have to carry an eppi pen constantly, but the whole school didn't have to stop eating kiwi fruit, which is the food I'm allergic to. However, everyone in my class had to wash their hands if they ate it, and/or if they planned to come anywhere near me. As for the shots, I've heard they don't work for everyone. I don't know if this is true or not, but the one time I inquired about them at the doctor, they wouldn't even consider giving them to me unless i was already in the hospital for fear it would give me the same reaction.
